On the matter of shoes

For his first year, every shoe in the house was, in his view, a gift to be redistributed. We found them in the garden, under the bed, once inside the fridge. He has since retired from the trade, though he keeps a slipper by the door out of professional interest.

The friend at the door

Marlow believes the postman is a friend who has simply not yet been introduced. Every morning, at ten past nine, he waits by the window. He does not bark. He watches, the way one watches for a train.

“Marlow arrived on a Tuesday, in a cardboard box the size of a loaf of bread. He has since grown into most of the sofa, the whole of the hallway rug, and the small ceremony of the morning walk.”

Sunday, always

On Sundays we walk to the water. He does not swim. He stands at the edge, considers it, and turns back. We take the same photograph each week. In one album, he is a puppy. In the next, he is grey around the muzzle. The light is the same.
